The Balearic Islands government has proposed a new tax on tourists between June and August. According to the Prime Minister of the Balearic Islands, Marga Progens, the measure will be an effective “deterrent” to tourists who come to the island solely to party and do not take into account the interests of the local community.
Progens also claims that this will help reduce the burden on infrastructure and improve the quality of life for locals.
The tax will be reduced in the winter months – from December to February – to stimulate tourism during the low season, when the flow of tourists to the island is significantly lower. Although specific figures for the tax have not yet been announced, Progens promises to present official data in February next year. The measure will form part of a wider program to combat mass tourism, which includes additional initiatives to change the island’s economic model.
